New Mechanic
The Force
Star Wars Unlimited TCG set 5: Legends of the Force introduces a brand new mechanic to the game: The Force. Each player has the chance throughout the game to lose or gain The Force through the actions they take. Both spotlight decks use a base which allows you to create your Force token when a friendly Force unit attacks. Various units can make use of having the Force as can both Leader abilities.
Hidden
Hidden is a new keyword. A unit with the Hidden keyword can’t be attacked the phase it was played. They can however be dealt damage in other ways.
This Jump to Lightspeed spotlight deck is built using Leader: Qui-Gon Jinn – Student of the Living Force (Cunning/Heroism) on Base: Jedi Temple (Command). The deck comprises of 50 cards from these three aspects. There are 31 Ground Units, 9 Space Units, 7 Events, and 3 Upgrades.

Deck focus
LEADER
Qui-Gon Jinn – Student of the Living Force ability is to exhaust and use the Force to return a non-leader unit to its owner’s hand to then play a non villainous unit that costs less than the returned unit from your hand for free.
Whereas the Maul deck looks to use and gain The Force several times during a turn, as the Qui-Gon player you really want to be keeping hold of The Force. The Maul deck has units that rely on using the Force, whereas the Qui-Gon deck is best using it when absolutely necessary (Qui-Gon’s ability or perhaps The Will Of The Force).
When Qui-Gon is deployed as a unit, you don’t need to be as precious keeping hold of the Force as his ability is active when he completes an attack and survives (and not needing to use The Force).
DECK OUTLINE
The Qui-Gon spotlight deck can be a little tricky to pilot. A few or more reps with it though and you will start to see how it works. Timing is key as setting up certain plays with Qui-Gon’s ability can be fairly obvious to your opponent and will give them a chance to stop you getting that second unit down. Sequencing and setting up combos is important.
Although you will generally be playing units on curve, units that are left in play will be below curve. Late game, there are obviously more options to pick from with better options being left in play.
TIPS
Ideally you should be looking for Youngling Padawan in your opening hand in order to create your Force token early. Based on many practice games with these two spotlight decks, it is worth mulliganing for. Anakin Skywalker is a good starting card too in order to gain The Force on turn two by attacking with him.
The idea is to try and get several units out during one phase, utilising their ‘When Played’ abilities and protecting certain units. It is good to have a range of different costed units in hand to utilise Qui-Gon’s ability. There are a number of units with ‘When Played’ abilities which makes returning them to your hand worthwhile, providing you have a cheaper unit to play.
Maz Kanata is a particularly good option for returning to hand and using several times throughout the game as she can pump a Force Unit’s attack by 2. This can be a fast and unexpected way to cause a little bit more damage. The likes of Luminous Beings and Paladin Training Corvette can be too slow to set up.
Returning J-Type Nubian Starship can be helpful to avoid losing a card from your hand when it is defeated.
One of the best units to use with Qui-Gon’s ability is Kelleran Beq. You are potentially playing two units (depending on the cost), cycling through your deck AND playing the extra card from your deck rather than your hand. By returning him and using him again throughout the game is a gamechanger.
Should you have attacked with Qui-Gon Jinn’s Aethersprite this phase, you can benefit even further from the units with ‘When Played’ abilities.
Although there is only one copy in the deck, Sneak Attack can be hugely beneficial if you can return that unit to your hand with Qui-Gon’s ability as you will not have to defeat it at the start of the regroup phase. Sneak Attack is just a great card with this ability.
It is important to slow your opponent’s game down by playing Sentinels and exhausting your opponents units which will give you the best chance at getting to 6 or 7 resources in order to play some of your bigger units.
Sentinels:
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a cheap Sentinel however you need to play Force units that phase (including himself) for him to gain the Keyword. There are a few Force units in the deck to make use of this.
Jedi Sentinel gains Sentinel only while you have The Force so it is important to keep on top of that.
Both Sentinel options are unfortunately within Force Choke range which can be devastating. Refugee of The Path will protect your Sentinels with a shield, keeping them on the board a little longer.
Exhausting:
There are several options for exhausting opponents units. Impossible Escape is great for a 1 cost event especially as you get to exhaust an enemy unit AND draw a card. Having the choice of either exhausting your own unit or using the Force to do this gives you some flexibility too.
You should be looking to play Qui-Gon Jinn’s Lightsaber on Qui-Gon once he has deployed in order to benefit from exhausting any number of units with a combined cost of 6 or less.
Ahsoka Tano and Tri-Droid Suppressor are some other ways to exhaust your opponents units to slow them down. Following up with the Stinger Mantis allows you to sneak in some damage.
Round Up
Keep hold of The Force and only use it when absolutely necessary. Slow down your opponent with Sentinels and exhausting their units. Try not to be too obvious when setting up Qui-Gon’s ability.
This Jump to Lightspeed spotlight deck is built using Leader: Darth Maul – Sith Revealed (Aggression/Villainy) on Base: Shadowed Undercity (Vigilance). The deck comprises of 50 cards from these three aspects. There are 34 Ground Units, 6 Space Units, 5 Events, and 5 Upgrades.
Decklist
Ground Units
2x Acolyte of the Beyond, 2x Chirrut Îmwe – Blind, But Not Deaf, 1x Count Dooku – Fallen Jedi, 3x Darth Sidious – The Phantom Menace, 3x Darth Tyranus – Servant of Sidious, 2x Infused Brawler, 2x Karis – We Don’t Like Strangers,, 2x Kylo Ren – I Know Your Story, 2x Merrin – Alone With the Dead, 3x Nightsister Warrior, 1x Oggdo Bogdo – Bogano Brute, 1x Pong Krell – It’s Treason, Then, 2x Savage Opress – Imbued With Hate, 3x Talzin’s Assassin, 2x Thralls of the Coven, 3x Witch of the Mist.

Deck focus
LEADER
Darth Maul can exhaust and use The Force to deal 1 damage to a unit and 1 damage to a different unit.
This ability is a lot more versatile than the Qui-Gon ability. There are several ways of gaining The Force in the Maul deck so getting this online shouldn’t be a problem. Do note that Maul’s ability must ping another unit so should your opponent only have one unit in play, you must ping one of your own. This works particularly well with Scimitar, Oggdo Boggdo and Pong Krell.
Deck Outline
This spotlight deck is more straightforward than the Qui-Gonn deck. There is less need for setting up combos and relying on certain cards to pop up. There is an element of sequencing (making sure to have The Force when needed) however the deck seems a lot more balanced and easier to pilot straight out of the box.
TIPS
Acolyte of the Beyond, Witch of The Mist and Nightsister Warrior are all good options for turn 1 in order to gain The Force early on which means you can start pinging units with Maul’s ability.
There are a number of units that are stronger if you have The Force when you play them so making sure to keep hold of The Force is essential should you have the following in your hand: Darth Tyranus, Talzin’s Assassin, Infused Brawler, Darth Sidious and/or Savage Opress. Two cards that can potentially finish Savage off unexpectedly from hand is Maz Kanata and Stinger Mantis so be wary of those plays. Otherwise just be on alert with what your opponent is up to. Luminous Beings and Paladin Training Corvette can pump your opponents stats however you will have time to react in between an attack. Once you have Savage on the field, just make sure to keep hold of The Force.
You can of course attack with a Force unit to gain The Force (thanks to the base) but another good option is Drain Essence which can be a surprise from hand. Another surprise from hand is the classic Force Choke. This is a very strong card against the Qui-Gonn deck as it can take out a number of strong 5 health units. Particularly if you know your opponent is setting up a play with Qui-Gon’s ability. Force Choke just shuts that down immediately.
There are some strong upgrades to play in this deck. As soon as Darth Maul has been deployed, make sure to whack down Darth Maul’s Lightsaber for a full on assault. Fallen Lightsaber can provide even more firepower. Although these upgrades are best of Maul, playing them on Kylo Ren allows card draw should you need it.
Round Up
It is best to do what Villains do best: be aggressive and don’t be afraid to damage your own units in the process.
